This is a poll to see what type of motor oil members are using.

havnt made it to my first oil change, but it will synthetic. as an auto tech, i see first hand, every day, the difference synthetic makes. after 80,000 miles regular oil engines have deposits, sludge build up, and other nasty unwanted effects. synthetic engines are still clean and sludge free.

Does anybody know what the dealer puts in the car?

I have always used synthetic Royal Purple in the engine, trans and differential. But today I was told not to use it because it attacks the seals. I never had this problem. If true, back to Castrol GTX dino oil. Anyone have info or comments?

If the motor oil came out of a Goodwrench container it is oil blended by Exxon/Mobil to GM specs. If it is bulk oil it is the lowest price oil the dealer could find that is GM approved.

RP motor oil is not approved by any manufacture because they will not pay to have it tested for the approval rating. It is an API license motor oil instead of API approved for the same reason. RP stated if any engine is damaged by the use of their motor oil and it can be proved, they will pay to have it fixed.

I have 2300 miles and no change oil light yet, will go with synthetic, was wondering about how many miles people have been getting before the light comes on with a half/half mix of aggressive driving and cruising

I would not wait for the light to come on if this is still the factory fill. I would had change the motor oil about 1300 miles ago.

I think Amsoil is the Best I've been running it in all my cars for 10 years or more heir Ea Filters are great also. I save a ton of money every year. I'm placing my order of 2 Gal + 2 Qts and 2 fliters about 100.00. after 15000 swap out filter and add the 2 qts and go another 10000. Not bad for a 100.00 bucks and I run their 0w30 Sig Series.

I changed my oil the first time at 3,000 miles, I let it break in with the factory oil, changed it to Mobil One 5x30 syn, I go 6,000 miles or 6 months, stays close to the full mark between oil changes.
Change it myself, I don't trust anyone else with it, you guys know the horror stories to. I had a 05 CTS Caddy with a 3.6 V6, also I have it in my G8, kind of used to this engine. By the way I retired from GM with 39 years.

Just bought my 09 G8 Sunday:D with 2400 miles or so on it.( Courtesy Car )
Changed the oil on Tuesday to Mobil 1 and Napa Gold Oil Filter 7090.
I usually change oil in new cars after about 1000 miles, and use Mobil in all of them with no issues.

Hi, Hope you enjoy your new G-8, fun car to drive.
My own opinion is motor oils are pretty much the same with the same API rating be it syn or regular oil, I to use Mobil 1 5w30 they seem to start easier in cold weather. Oil is a subject that is more about how one feels about a certain product over what the facts are, example Valvoline oils which are a fine product are advertised at some GM dealers and sold at a higher price as a premium oil over other oils with the same rating, same is true as to how much better Pennsylvania oil is than other oils, it does not matter where oil comes from.
I'd stay with exactly what you are doing, including that oil filter , I believe oil filters vary, plus everybody is familiar with Mobil-1 around the world.

My educated guess is that if you are paying less than $50.00 for an oil change, the oil is likely to be conventional.

Once my change oil message arrives, I will install Quaker State Q (really whatever national brand is cheapest) and a Mobil 1 filter. I am not sold on Mobil 1; I feel I have had better fuel mileage with any other synthetic. I do insist on the GM 6094 spec, 5W-30 as the owner's manual specifies this and not all synthetics have it (like Valvoline for example). I believe the conventional oil will be fine until then. I use the Mobil 1 filter because it is a high-capacity, high-pressure filter.

For oil afficionados: what does the W represent?

I changed to Mobil1 full synthetic at 1500 miles (8.8 quarts--$85 freaking dollars!!). I always heard that the first oil change should be done around 1000 miles. After this, I suppose I will go by the light on the dash; and I suspect that will be too early.

Hi rrielly, you did good changing oil at 1500 miles, you could have gone farther if you wanted to. I change my own oil, I buy a 5 qt container of Mobil 1 for $22.00 and 2 more qts for$10.00, making it a total of 7 qts, I have the v6, 3.6 engine, plus Fram filter at $7.00 for a total of around $39.00.
I go 6 months between oil changes on my G8, oil consumption is about quarter of an inch down from full with about 6,000 miles on it
Goog luck,
Steve
