I hi-jacked the car last Sunday afternoon (from my Wife) for my weekly drive. We went up to the North Carolina foothills to see the Dogwoods blooming and this was my first extended drive in the new G8 GT. I've owned a lot of cars, both new and used, and I have to say that this is the best feeling I've had behind the wheel of a new purchase since my '86 IROC Camaro. This car gives me that ol' feeling that I just want to keep driving and not go home. You know what I'm talking about....come up to a stoplight 80 miles from home and decide at the last second to turn left instead of right toward home just so you can burn some more time behind the wheel.
We passed the first 1k miles on the trip. So far, I have gotten about 23 mpg in mixed highway-city driving. Not bad since I had to blow the soot out of her out every once in a while, like a when a BMW, Porsche, or Mousetang was testing their curiosity. I really like the sound of the engine when it pulls to third gear.:naughty:
The on board computer has to process 743,549,286 bits of information per second (trust me :i_rolleyes:) to determine when to shift into 2nd gear. It could use a few more millivolts of power to the processor to help it decide a little sooner which gear it likes to be in.
I am impressed with the fit and finish of the body. The paint is awesome! The interior is clean but busier than I'm accustomed to. I need to keep a pair or reading glasses with me so I can read the stuff going on all over the dash.
Now, about those cup holders.....why oh why in the last 10-15 years have we not found an engineer that can figure out how to keep my water bottle from landing in the floor upon a reasonably tame turn? The 2000 Grand Prix GT we had was worse than the G8, but not by much. I have dibbs on the patent for the little divider between the 2 holes where the cups are supposed to stay which will keep the cups from falling into the opposite hole (if it's empty) upon every turn.
I have issue with the placement of the seat adjusting switch. My hands aren't the largest ones you'll see, but it's all I can do to squeeze my hand between the door panel and seat to reach the switch. Another seat foible is the twist knob for the seat back adjustment. That thing is hard to turn, I'm talkin' about popping my thumb out of it's socket hard to turn. (Dont worry, it usually pops right back in...I get over it in a few minutes!)
I can occationally hear a rattle up in the sunroof switch area. It looks like it will be necessary to put some kind of wind deflector in front of the sunroof if we intend to keep it open while driving....the roar is loud enough that music or conversation is near impossible. I'll just keep mine closed because I don't like the looks of those add-on deflectors.
Nit Pickey little things, I know, but something for the Government Car Czar to work on if they finish taking over GM and keep building this car.
In summary, I really like the new G8. I enjoy the performance, looks, and comfort of the car and with a few tweaks it will be as close to perfect as any car I've owned so far.
