I have 2009 G8, live in Canada where speed limits are in kilometers... The speedometer is for 180 which is fine for miles per hour but I have buried the speedometer several times because I am in Kilometers mode... I know I shouldn't be doing it but I wonder if it will break the speedometer when I do that.............

You reply appreciated,

Bob:kap:

Might not break the speedometer but you'll see those nasty red/blue police lights in your rearview all the time. ahhh but hell, who cares, that's why we bought the G8. Bring it on Cops.

Remember.... In Ontario 50+ over the limit is the Cops can take your Car and License right there at the side of the road..... If you G8 could talk I am sure it would be saying "I don't like impound lots".

You are a dangerous driver if you are driving those speeds. Car manufacturers should have all speedometers stop at 120kms - maybe drivers like you would use their brains then. My family is on the same roads as your on...think about how driving stupid fast like that could affect others- forever. If you want to drive fast - rent some time at a local speedway! Give my wife and kids a break!

mrmediumoltage,
those of us that do not have deminished driving skills can quite easily had our cars at high speeds. This car is designed from the factory to handle 180mph and they are speed limited to 140. My car handles just as well at 125 as it does at 75. I do agree that people need to use extreme caution when driving at high speeds but you have no details from this driver. I also have 3 children but your type would probably call it child abuse if the car were to be going 80 in a 75 if they were with me. It is people like you that enter the interstate at 45 and then accelerate to 75 rather than being at almost interstate speed as a proper driver should be. Also, how about moving over when other traffic is trying to merge onto the highway!

Well you answered my question. Now I won't have to experiment.

Maybe you should consider this,

The probability of death, disfigurement, or debilitating injury grows with higher speed at impact.

Such consequences double for every 16 Kmph over 80 kmph that a vehicle travels.

Many drivers don't consider this. They slow their speed in residential areas, or when the weather turns bad. To them, a few KMs an hour over the posted speed limit is an acceptable risk. Their excuse -- other drivers do it. They believe the worst that can happen to them is to receive a speeding ticket.

Drivers like this are wrong. Maybe even dead wrong, because driving too fast for conditions or exceeding the posted speed limit can kill you.

Consider These Speed-Related Facts:

Rural roads account for over 60 percent of all speed-related fatal crashes.

Sixty six percent of speed-related crashes involved a single vehicle.. (this is a good thing - the odds that my wife and kids will be involved is down to 33%)

Sixty percent of all speed- related fatal crashes occurred at night (6 pm to 6 am)..

Drivers involved in speed-related fatal crashes are more likely to have a history of traffic violations..

On average, 1,000 Americans are killed every month in speed-related crashes.
Economic and Environmental Costs of $peeding
Fuel consumption increases steadily above 70 kmph with passenger cars and light trucks using approximately 50 percent more fuel traveling at 120 kmph than they do at 90 kmph.

Don't get me wrong - I like to step on it too.....but I have seen too many deaths on the major highways I drive on. I have two friends in different police forces and they both report (and it is documented) that the majority of traffic fatalities are related to SPEED!

Besides that - it's breaking the law....so it must be OK to break the law where you live!

BUT- Let's get back to talking about how GREAT our G8's are!

I have a great idea! Lets all get on the hiway and move to the far left lane and do the speed limit, or 5 under, and see how many people we can get mad and cause road rage! Isnt that fun?? I wish I had that big push bar front bumper tow trucks use to shove them out of the way!

I was wondering what the governor was set to. I was driving from St Louis to Memphis last week on I-55 with no traffic so I decided to find out. "Poncho" very quikcly jumped up to 138 when I saw some traffic on the horizon so I dropped back to 75 again. The German automakers have a "gentleman's agreement" where their sedans are limited to 155 mph.

mrmediumvoltage - First off, I don't know how old you are but the way you are posting Kmph is confusing. If you are talking Kilometers versus MPH's they are 2 entirely different speeds. When traveling at 120 Kilometers per Hour this equals 74 Miles per hour.. Totally different speeds. You act as if everyone is traveling at 180 miles per hour or 290 Kilometers per Hour. Either way, depending on the posted speed limit or if there is a posted speed limit where you live (ie. Montana - they don't have posted limits in some area's). It's called not driving past the limits of your surroundings or road conditions. Your comment about accidents that happen between 6pm - 6am is very vague. You are also leaving out a very important part (Drunk Drivers). Not to mention the reason why there are more accidents related to speed is due to the use of Cell Phones; not necessarily the speeder but another driver. Those who are talking on the phone or TEXTING while driving are less prone to doing what they are supposed to, that is paying full attention to driving. Test has proven that those who Text while driving are just as dangerous as those who are Drinking and driving. I live in a Major metropolitan city and we have posted speed limits on some roads of 70mph. Those who don't do the posted speed limit are a big reason why accidents happen because the don't pay attention, signal or even look when changing lanes. Then again they also drive in lanes that are clearly marked for PASSING ONLY at speeds that are slower or they pass with the Cruise Control on. I don't know if they have drivers ed where you live but you are taught that when you commit to passing another care you speed up (reasonably) and then move over .

Oh one more fact for you. Traveling on a road trip at speeds between 75mph and 80mph I averaged 25.7 miles per gallon. I don't think that is unreasonable for a full fledge V8. In fact that is way better then I ever got in my truck or a V6 I sedan owned. That's actually better then what the sticker said on the vehicle. Those of us who do drive a little faster at times doesn't me we drive reckless or endanger everyone on the road. Though sometimes you don't realize you are doing the speed you are because it doesn't feel like it in the car.

OK.. Off my soap box now. Enjoy the car in a way you feel is responsible but respect others on the road. We all share it ya know!

I'm farly new to this forum but not to FORUMS.

The Person asked a question about his speedometer and people start asking/telling him it is a hazard to drive that fast. Well the way I see it, that has NO answer to his quetion.

As far as him driving too fast "WHO GIVES A FLYING ...."

I'm sure everyone on here that bought G8s, Bought them for there looks not the horsepower. lol

So use it if you have it. Fell that force and speed ALL THE TIME.
